Perfect lips

Information

Lips and smile form a very important field of modern cosmetic treatment. Studies have shown that fuller lips are a sign of health, youthfulness and high femininity.

Many people believe that lip enhancement is a simple procedure. A good and natural result is a combination of vast knowledge of facial anatomy, good surgical skills and artistic sense of the doctor performing the treatment.

  • The height of the upper lip compared to the lower lip must be between points 0.65-0.85 (see here). This analogy refers to the volume of the lips and is one of the most characteristic measurement methods.
  • Cupid’s bow: this area must be well-shaped with visible outline.
  • The vermilion zone: is the central area of the lips and must be well-shaped with visible borders.
  • The philtrum: is located exactly above the vermilion zone. It is bordered by ridges on the left and right that add volume to the area between the lips and nose.
  • The white line or the vermilion border: This is the line that provides the demarcation of the shape of lips. The white line must be visible and slightly projecting. It turns flat with ageing. Hyaluronic acid or fat can be injected in this area.
  • The upper lip is has a 1-3 mm projection compared to the lower lip. On the third picture.
  • Young lips have a gentle curve extending from the nose to the upper lip and from the lower lip to the chin line.
  • The reddish area of the lips has a sharp demarcation, is well-shaped and with good projection.
  • The shape of the lower lip is symmetrically full on both sides.

Sensual or Full Lips?

Lip classification: Sensual or full?

Through our vast experience in cosmetic lip contouring and the measurements performed on over 200 patients we have formed the following lips classification based on the distance ratio between the upper and lower lip.

Λεπτά χείλη αναλογία άνω/κάτω 0,5 και κάτω Χείλη Κανονικά αναλογία άνω/κάτω 0,65
Thin lips: upper/lower lip ratio of 0.5 or less Regular lips: upper/lower lip ratio of 0.65
Χείλη Αισθησιακά αναλογία άνω/κάτω 0,75 - 0,85 - 0,90 Χείλη Αισθησιακά αναλογία άνω/κάτω 0,75 - 0,85 - 0,90
Sensual lips: upper/lower lip ratio of 0.75 – 0.85 – 0.90
Σαρκώδη αναλογία άνω/κάτω 0,90 - 1,00 Παραμορφωμένα είναι τα χείλη όπου το άνω χείλος είναι μεγαλύτερο σε σχέση με το κάτω.
Full lips: upper/lower lip ratio of 0.90 – 1.00 Disfigured lips: the upper lip is larger than the lower lip.

This last case is an example of how easily one can disfigure a person's lips if unaware of the appropriate proportion or if lacking the aesthetic criterion. Our goal is to achieve sensual – full lips.

How can we achieve the Perfect Result?

How can we achieve the Perfect Result?

The following is necessary to achieve a perfect and natural result on the lips:

  1. Photograph of the lips on the first consultation.
  2. Print-out of the photograph
  3. Analysis of the photograph
  4. Special measurements that aim at providing symmetry aesthetic result. Measurements are performed with special tools to yield the golden ratio (φ)
  5. Discussion with the patient on his/her expectations e.g. full lips, sensual lips, symmetry.
  6. Selection of method to achieve the desired result.

Lip Contouring Method

Lip Contouring Method

The best methods involve hyaluronic acid and fat injections. The injection is performed either on the white line or the reddish area of the lips, depending on the result we want to achieve.

The one method we reject is liquid silicone.

For patients who wish to obtain more permanent results, several other options are available:

  • Lip plastic surgery: Removing 1-3 mm of skin exactly above the white line and repositioning the lips towards this area. We thus achieve an increase of the height of the upper lip.
  • FulFil, combination of silicone and ePTFl. It feels like a thin string. Two very strong incisions on the left and right side of the lips are necessary. It is placed underneath the reddish area of the lip. Performed with local anaesthesia.
  • Permalip: Soft, solid silicone. Application is identical to that of the FulFil technique. Performed with local anaesthesia.
  • Fat transfer: Lasts longer than hyaluronic acid but may cause abnormalities on the shape of the lips as well as scars.
  • Gore-Tex, known as ePTEE (polytetrafluoroethylene ). Marketed under the names: Advanta, Ultrasoft – soft Form.
  • Radiesse/ Radiance- calcium hydroxylapatite
  • Grafts: Usually performed along with Face lift. In such cases we may use tissue from the patient’s face and place it on the lips.
  • If the distance between the nose and the upper lip is to big then we may remove tissue from under the nose.
