The aim of this technique is not just to give the patient a flat tummy, but to give the abdomen the anatomical features of a young person’s tummy such as a visible midline (champagne groove) and the oblique line and curvature of the waist that add remarkable elegance to the silhouette.
How was the Champagne Groove technique developed?
All new techniques begin as a stimulus or minds’ game and are then implemented as concrete and reproducible techniques.
Behind this state of mind is our love for our patients as well as a constant quest for self-improvement and excellence.
Let us first look into this intellectual journey and then we shall go through the surgical procedure.

Greece, Cyclades-3,000-6,000 years ago: The Cycladic figurines were carved by talented artisans who worked on a straight line giving it human shape and making exquisite art. |

Greece 5th Century BC and after:
In Greece, sculpture developed rapidly, and all known masterpieces were produced from around the 4th century.
Take a close look at the abdomen in Cycladic figurines; four simple lines.
Now notice the abdomen in classical Greek statues. See how great the differences are. How the abdomen is close to perfection in classical statues.
While studying ancient Greek statues, paintings and photographs of beautiful female and male bodies of our days, I couldn’t help but notice that a flat abdomen was not enough.
If we wanted to excel in abdominoplasty and offer a surgical outcome that would resemble the skilful artistic touch of our ancestors, we ought to be able to deliver the same results as the ancient sculptors! |

Modern plastic surgery as a form of sculpture of the body is constantly developing. When abdominoplasty was first introduced in plastic surgery, the relevant surgical procedure was simple. It involved a large incision, tissue preparation, cutting off the excess skin, inserting drainage tubes and suturing. The result resembled the abdomen of Cycladic figurines. Up to now, we were looking for advanced techniques that would allow us to offer our patients a well-sculpted abdomen that would bring to mind the silhouette of ancient statues of Classical and Hellenistic Greece. Thus, 3 years ago we implemented a ground-breaking new technique in Abdominoplasty. We called it the "champagne groove” technique.
What is the Champagne Groove technique? How is it performed?
It is a combination of plastic surgery techniques.
1) Micro Liposuction
2) Placement of internal suture under tension between the abdominal walls and the dermis
3) Specific handling of skin during removal of skin flaps
When is this done?
During abdominoplasty
Is it a time-consuming process?
It adds a further fifteen minutes to the surgical technique
Is the result permanent?
So far, the result is permanent in 148 patients.
Let's look at the results:
